Diederick Kraaijeveld - Old wood

There's no paint here. Each line and colored area are created with separate pieces of found wood.

Description from artists site:

Used Wood, passion materialized in vintage reclaimed wood...
Diederick Kraaijeveld (Oudhout/Oldwood, The Netherlands, 1963) builds classic and modern icons in vintage reclaimed wood; an Airstream trailer, a Porsche 911 or a pair of Chuck Taylors (All Star sneakers)...With sometimes century-old painted planks, salvaged during intensive trips along dumpsters, old Amsterdam canal mansions, run down farms and faraway coasts, Kraaijeveld "paints" photo-realistic images... His palette is not filled with paint in all its different colors: a huge warehouse full of old wooden planks forms the base of each work of art.

Robots and Monsters for Charity

Robots and Monsters is a website founded by illustrator Joe Alterio
to raise funds for a quartely changing charitable cause. The way it works is simple: You supply $50 and three words - any 3 words, and in return you get a 6"x6" original signed piece of art that more or less interprets your three words. In the form of a robot and/or monster that is. The example below was imagined from the words - cowboy, eyeballs, jaunty. Works for me.
The current cause is the Electronic Frontier Foundation
a group dedicated to to defending citizens rights in the ever evolving digital age.Link

RED Camera Makers working on a DSLR!!??!!

This was posted on the Red user forums by the company's founder Jim Jannard-

The primary advantage to RED is REDCODE. Compressed RAW at over 23.976 fps. This is a core invention of RED that's full effects have not been seen yet. The secondary advantage of RED is our sensor program. Some could argue that this is number one. Mysterium "Monstro" is a sensor program that pushes the envelope past anything on the horizon. It will go into Epic, and another camera aimed squarely at the DSLR market. Epic ships with Mysterium-X and has a free upgrade to Monstro. Scarlet has been talked about extensively. It is a 3K, 120fps camera with a built-in 8X zoom that starts at 28mm (full frame still 35mm) wide angle. The T-stop will be "at least" as published. We have a couple of other "tricks up our sleeves". The important message is that we are just getting started. Jim
Which is very interesting coming right on the heels of Nikons release of the D90 which can shoot 720p HD video.

Image Fulgurator

Ha! This is a very cool idea.
It's basically just a film projector that can shine words or pictures on walls or whatever. But the cool part is that it's powered by a camera flash. The type, like many, that can be set to go off when they sense another flash going off.
So what you do is point this at something that people will be taking flash pictures of and when they take the picture the image fulgurator projects something for justa few milliseconds. The person taking the picture never sees it because it happens so fast, but their camera captures it. Brilliant! See a longer explanation and a video of it in action at checkpoint charlie here

Edit individual notes in a polyphonic recording

Celemony, maker of Melodyne, software for pitch-shifting and time-stretching music have made a new breakthrough with their product. Polyphonic recordings, a guitar chord for instance, can now have each individual note within that chord be editable.
Major chords can become minor etc, not just shifted up or down in pitch. A whole song could potentially be created from one chord sample. Watch the video that shows this amazing technology in action.

Key facts

Access individual notes in chords and polyphonic audio:
see them, grab them, edit them
Audio, not MIDI!
while editing single chord notes is common for MIDI, it is a world premiere for audio recordings. Patent pending.
Examples of use:
tune a guitar after recording, correct harmony vocals that are out of tune, or fix their timing, turn major chords to minor (and vice versa), switch tone scales, mute single notes, remix volume levels, etc. – all after the performance is already taped!
All Melodyne tools available:
pitch shifting, time stretching, formants, amplitude – you name it ...

Cooling computer chips with heat

MSI is working on on a cooling fan for computer chips that would run off the heat generated by that chip. The concept, already in the working prototype stage, uses a Stirling Engine to power a fan instead of using an additional power tap. It's part of their green initiative. Cool :)

1000 Demons

This project is based on an ancient drawing exercise in which an artist attempts to illustrate 100 demons. Here, the idea has been merged into a blog and expanded to create a bestiary blog of 1000 things I find irksome, vexing, infuriating and wrong. It is more than just an exercise in drawing 1000 demons; it is a beautiful excuse to rant.Link

Interview with Antony Hall

We-make-money-not-art has an interview with Antony Hall. Among Antony's interests are making music by lathing wood, making people happy by connecting their brains to fish and searching for the illusive moss bears among many others. How do you end up with a life like that?

How to clean your DSLR gear

Lighting Mods has one of the most thorough guides to cleaning DSLRs I've seen. I've yet to clean my sensor despite having my camera almost 2 years now. Maybe if I shot more landscapes I'd notice the spots more but they rarely are ever noticeable.
If you do plan on trying be sure to have a very good guide such as this on hand as you can really trash your camera if you do it wrong.

Bonsai Tree Table by Anke Weiss

This table was created from 150 bonsai trees that took 7 years to grow.
One of the more interesting aspects of this design is how it was received on the site where it was featured. Most of the comments condemned the artist for killing to make art. Umm...I wonder what the furniture in these peoples houses are made out of.
Maybe its that this table looks so much more alive? Link

Gorgeous Motion Graphics by Robert Hodgin

Solar, with lyrics. from flight404 on Vimeo.

Seems to have been created with a programming language called "Processing". I wonder how difficult it is to learn.

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is developed by artists and designers as an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain.

Unphotographable

Apparently, since 2004 Michael David Murphy has been posting the photos he didn't take. Michael describes his site like this:

Unphotographable is a catalog of exceptional mistakes. Photos never taken that weren't meant to be forgotten. Opportunities missed. Simple failures. Occasions when I wished I'd taken the picture, or not forgotten the camera, or had been brave enough to click the shutter.

In the place of these mistakes he writes a short description, often vivid and moving in their own right.
